A news-style investigative graphic showing the Suchindram Police Station building on the left, two screenshots depicting a man being physically dragged and restrained by multiple individuals in the center, and a portrait of a man on the right. A silhouette of a police officer stands in the foreground. Large bold text reads: "Family Dispute or Police Vendetta?" with a subheadline stating, "Suchindram Constable Arul Accused of Dragging and Assaulting Youth After Personal Feud." The design uses dark tones with red and yellow accents to emphasize allegations of police brutality and a personal dispute.

A viral video from Kanyakumari district has raised troubling questions about the line between personal disputes and police authority.

The incident revolves around Special Branch constable Arul, a family dispute, a confrontation in Suchindram, and allegations that three civilians were assaulted while being taken to a police station.

The official response so far has been a criminal case, a departmental inquiry, and the transfer of the constable to the Armed Reserve.

But is that enough?

A Dispute That Started on the Street

According to reports, Nikom, a government transport corporation employee working in Chennai, had come to visit his sister's family in Keezh Kaattuvilai near Suchindram.

On the evening of the incident, he was allegedly questioned by constable Arul while standing in the area. Reports state that Arul asked why he was there and allegedly spoke to him in an abusive manner.

Nikom reportedly informed his relative Vinesh about the encounter. What followed was a decision that would eventually lead to police cases, injuries, and a viral video.

Vinesh, Nikom, and another individual reportedly went to Arul's residence to question why such language had been used.

An argument followed.

The Viral Video and the Bigger Questions

According to the complaint filed later, police personnel arrived at the scene and took the three men toward Suchindram Police Station.

The most serious allegation is what happened during that process.

The complainants allege that the three men were beaten and dragged while being taken to the station. Vinesh is said to have suffered injuries.

A video that later surfaced on social media appears to show aggressive handling of the men. The footage has since become the centre of public attention.

The question is simple.

If three individuals had committed an offence, was it necessary to allegedly drag and assault them?

Police officers have the authority to detain. They have the authority to investigate. They have the authority to register cases.

But do they have the authority to use force because of a personal conflict?

That is exactly what the ongoing inquiry must determine.

The Shadow of a Previous Feud

One detail makes this case particularly sensitive.

Reports indicate that there was already a prior dispute between Vinesh's family and constable Arul.

That immediately changes the nature of the questions being asked.

If there was an existing feud, was every action taken on the day of the incident purely professional?

Or did personal hostility influence the events that followed?

These are not minor questions.

When ordinary citizens have a dispute with another civilian, the matter remains between individuals.

When one side of that dispute carries police powers, the standards of scrutiny become much higher.

Cases Filed Against Both Sides

Police have registered a case against constable Arul based on the complaint made by Vinesh's family.

At the same time, police have also registered cases against Vinesh, Nikom, and the third individual for allegedly going to Arul's residence and creating a disturbance.

This means investigators now have two competing versions of the same incident.

That makes an impartial inquiry even more important.

The viral video, witness statements, medical records, and police documentation will all play a crucial role in establishing what actually happened.

Is a Transfer Really Accountability?

Perhaps the most important question is not about what happened during the confrontation.

It is about what happened afterwards.

Following the controversy, constable Arul was transferred to the Armed Reserve and a DSP-level inquiry was ordered.

But many will ask whether a transfer is being treated as a substitute for accountability.

Transfers do not answer allegations.

Transfers do not determine responsibility.

Transfers do not reassure the public that misconduct, if proven, will have consequences.

When a civilian faces serious criminal allegations, the law takes its course.

When a police officer faces allegations involving assault, misuse of authority, and a viral video that has triggered public concern, should the immediate response be merely shifting him from one posting to another?

If the allegations are serious enough to warrant a criminal case and a departmental inquiry, many would argue that suspension pending investigation should be the minimum step required to preserve public confidence in the process.

An inquiry must be free from influence.

It must also be seen as free from influence.

That is why the question remains.

Why a transfer?

Why not suspension pending the outcome of the investigation?

The Real Issue Is Public Trust

This case is no longer only about one constable, one family, or one village.

It is about public confidence in law enforcement.

Every police officer carries powers that ordinary citizens do not possess.

That is precisely why allegations involving personal disputes and official authority are treated with greater seriousness.

If the allegations are false, the inquiry should establish that clearly.

If the allegations are true, accountability should follow.

What the public should not be left with is the impression that serious accusations against a police officer can be addressed merely by moving him to another department.

The DSP inquiry now carries a responsibility larger than this single incident.

It must answer a question that the viral video has placed before the public:

Was this law enforcement?

Or was this a personal feud that crossed into the exercise of police power?
