A sexual harassment complaint against an inspector from the Arumuganeri Police Station in Thoothukudi district has triggered a departmental inquiry, a suspension order, and a series of public videos in which the officer has attempted to defend himself.
Inspector Dileepan, who was suspended pending investigation, has publicly challenged the allegations, repeatedly stating that he is willing to resign if even a single colleague or member of the public confirms the accusations against him. However, amid the emotional defence, one aspect of his statements has drawn particular attention: at no point did he directly deny sending the messages that form the basis of the complaint.
The Complaint That Led to Suspension
According to the allegations, a woman police officer working under Inspector Dileepan accused him of sending inappropriate messages through WhatsApp and SMS.
The complaint further alleges that when she did not respond to those messages, she was subjected to increased work pressure and mental distress. It is also alleged that obstacles were created when she sought a transfer.
The matter reportedly escalated when the woman officer informed her husband about the alleged harassment. A complaint was subsequently submitted to senior police officials, leading to an internal inquiry.
The allegations became public after reports surfaced in the media, forcing the issue into the spotlight.
Dileepan's Public Defence
As news of the complaint spread, Inspector Dileepan released videos on social media defending himself.

He repeatedly stated that female police personnel working under him are treated like his own children. He argued that such officers would never make such allegations against him.

The Resignation Challenge

He declared that if even one of the 66 personnel working in his police station said he was capable of such behaviour, he would resign from service.
He extended the challenge further by stating that if local residents from areas where he served believed the allegations to be true, he would also step down.
He additionally announced that he would not join his new posting until he had cleared his name and stated that he was prepared to submit a resignation letter if necessary.
What He Said and What He Didn't Say
A significant aspect of Dileepan's public response is what was missing.
Throughout his videos, he spoke extensively about honour, public respect, his service record, his relationship with colleagues, and his willingness to face investigation.
He also stated that he was ready to hand over his mobile phone to authorities for examination.
However, despite the repeated explanations and emotional appeals, he did not directly state that the messages were never sent by him. He did not categorically deny sending the messages that form the foundation of the complaint.
Instead, his defence largely relied on arguments about character and reputation.

Suspension Is Not a Finding of Guilt
Following his suspension, Dileepan released another video in which he argued that suspension should not be viewed as proof of wrongdoing.
He stated that suspension is a procedural step often used to facilitate a fair inquiry and does not automatically mean that allegations have been proven.
On this point, he maintained that he expects the investigation to clear his name and allow him to return to duty.

The allegations made by the woman police officer are serious and require careful examination. Equally, the public defence mounted by Inspector Dileepan has placed significant attention on the outcome of the inquiry.
